SSome of the torrents I've downloaded windows media will not play, and I've tried downloading win rar and win zip, but am unsure how to open the files with either of them? thanks
What extention do the files have that you have downloaded?
Well, firstly, check the extension of the files you download, even while you are downloading. If you use MuTorrent, for instance, when you click the download link and the torrent opesn in the "add new torrent" dialog window, by pressing shift-tab 4 times you should be able to see a listof the files in the torrent itself (I know this may not hold true for the very latest version, I have an older version).
If the files are .zip or .rar or .r00 .r01 etc, the chances are they are locked with a password and you'll hve to sign up for some service or click on a web site or join some group to get the passwords, I'd advice against downloading any of these files as you'll never be able to use them.
Only download files in the formt you expect, .mp3 or similar (.ogg, .m4a, .flac, .wma).
I use Foobar rather than winamp, although it shouldn't matter for your purposes, the upside to Foobar is that it place all these formats, .m4a, .ogg, .flac etc.
Wiamp shoud play most of these, may be not .m4a, I am not ure about that, but you should definitely be able to download plug-ins to enable winamp to do it at least.

help with torants? if you have a torent in your life, get a plumber. hehehehehe
You may not have the right codec, that's something I've run into. I'd grab a codec pack, the KLite one is a good one. I don't recall the exact website address, but if you google it you should find it quickly.
go to filehippo.com for codec players and even winRAR allmost evrything you need is there
and if your computer doesnt show you file extensions you can enable it by going to my computer, click on the tools menu and arrow down to folder options and press enter on it. Then ctrl tab to VIEW tab to the list of check boxed items and arrow down to hide file extensions for known file types, and make sure thats unchecked. then click ok to close the dialogue box. If you are using a newer version of utorrent that doesn't show you the files in torrent you can see this the show files like thats next to the download torrent link on sites like www.btjunkie.com .. once you have winrar or winzip installed (actually i prefer 7zip, but to each their own) you can right click on the file by pressing the applications key once you have selected the file and arrow down to one of the extract options.
